So i found this tutorial on FPSB and i figure why not spread the wealth to everyone/anyone who would like to start modeling items in 3ds max, i found this tutorial VERY thurough and has helped me learn everything need to make a pistol in 3ds and while doing so you will learn how the 3ds program works.

Through these tutorials you will learn how to:
** Model a weapon (in this case a glock)
** Creating the UV maps
** Basic texturing of the gun
** Creating your own rig
** Animating it
** And lastly compiling it

This tutorial is brought to you by the user Stormy from Game-Artist.Net, a community for and by game artists.
This set of tutorials is intended to help and guide people through the full process of creating a weapon and compiling it into the Half-Life 2 Source Engine. The tutorials are going to be released in chapters, each of which will focus on a specific area of the pipeline from modeling through texturing and compiling and finally compiling into Counter-Strike: Source.

So basically if u are completely new to all this and you really want to learn and create a weapon and get it ingame, these tutorial series of pure awesomeness is for you ! They can also be useful if say, you already know how to model but doesnt know how to Unwrap for example.

What you will need:
** 3dsMax ( preferably 8/9 )
** Photoshop (Note that you can use other programs for skinning if you dont have Photoshop)
** Everything else is explained in the tutorials
** and lastly some patience

Ok the first series of tutorials will teach you how to model a weapon and can be downloaded here:
http://files.filefront.com/model+3d+glock+weaponzip/;9005523;/fileinfo.html

The next series covers how you create the Uvmaps and textures and can be downloaded here:
http://files.filefront.com/Texturingzip/;9000493;/fileinfo.html

The last part which covers how you create your own rig, animate and lastly compiling can be downloaded here:
http://files.filefront.com/AnimationPart3rar/;9006658;/fileinfo.html

I really hope you guys find this as helpful as i did. Good Luck. :D
I found this tutorial Here and asked the maker if i could re post it and he said it's what he made it for :D

This would be great, but you know, the funny thing is that I don't have about $3500 in my pocket at the moment, I probably have about $1000 in my bank! :-\

Are you talking about buying 3ds Max? Because if you are, you... Don't really have to pay anything to get it.

a very powerful free modeling program thats getting even better every day.

great option for those who are broke or dont like the restrictions of "free" / trial editions of other programs.

anything you can do in other programs can be done in blender generally and if cant be done in blender it can be worked around with a small bit of adaptation and work.

There is one major disadvantage, the smd exporter Plugin doesn't support animations.
